Development Trust gets funding boost

Rousay, Egilsay and Wyre Development Trust is to receive the funds necessary to install a 900kW community wind turbine on Rousay, after the Big Lottery Fund shelled out nearly £2 million to projects in Orkney, today, Wednesday.

As part of its Community Assets Programme, the Big Lottery Fund granted £1,992,569 to wind turbine projects on the islands of Shapinsay, Hoy, and Stronsay, as well as Rousay. Sanday also benefitted from the windfall, with funds granted for the building of a 'youth hub' on the island.

By working together on their wind turbine projects, including sharing a project management team, a total of £160,000 was saved, a move which was heavily praised by the Big Lottery Fund.

Rousay, Egilsay and Wyre Development Trust itself received £435,000 of the funds, to build its turbine, which was granted planning permission last year.

Last week, a majority of the island voted in favour of the project, which will sell energy to the National Grid, generating a £2.7 million community trust fund over the next 20 years, which the Development Trust is aiming to use to encourage business development and for the "introduction of public transport".
