Community votes in favour of wind turbine

The results of the recent wind turbine ballot have been revealed, with an overwhelming majority voting in favour.

Voluntary Action Orkney, on behalf of Rousay, Egilsay and Wyre Development Trust, sent a voting slip to every Rousay, Egilsay and Wyre resident on the Electoral Roll, asking if each was in favour of the proposed 900 kW community wind turbine, due to be installed at Kingarly Hill, Rousay.

The Development Trust received Planning Permission for the wind turbine in January 2009, but are now seeking the support of the community in their Big Lottery Fund application, which can provide the Development Trust with some of the necessary funds to begin installation.

136 voting slips were returned - a return rate of 68%. An impressive 80% (109 voters) voted "yes" (in favour of the proposed wind turbine), with 20% (26 voters) voting "no". 1 voting slip was "spoiled".
