The pontoon with Rousay's turbine on board, Saturday evening

Rousay's Big Turbine arrives on the island

The 'big turbine' is now on Rousay. Arriving on board a pontoon early yesterday evening, Saturday, the turbine parts were removed by lorries - a process which took place throughout the night.

Work will now commence to get all of the parts up the turbine's newly-constructed access track on Kingarly Hill.

Rousay, Egilsay and Wyre Development Trust is one of five development trust across Orkney which are in the process of installing community wind turbines. Shapinsay's turbine was delivered on the same pontoon earlier in the week, while Hoy and Stronsay have already taken delivery this summer. Eday's turbine is scheduled to arrive at a later date.

The 900kW turbine is expected to generate a community trust fund of £2.7 million over the next 20 years, providing funds for community projects.
