Reduce, Reuse, Recycle! (including the Mobile Charity Shop)

Description:

Managing waste - reduce it, reuse it, and/or recycle it!
Based on the 'Waste Hierarchy', which classifies waste management strategies according to their desirability.
The Development Trust has focused on the 3Rs (Reduce, Reuse, Recyle), and so, referring to the Waste Hierarchy: Reducing (using less) is usually preferred to Reusing (e.g. second-hand goods; repaired items), which in turn is generally favoured over Recycling (which actually uses energy as part of the process of changing the physical properties of a product).

What has happened so far:
  • April 2009: Community Powerdown Officer, Michelle Koster is appointed by the Development Trust, on a 2-year contract. 'Recycling and Waste Management' is identified as one of her main projects.
  • January 2010: Bid for funding submitted to the Climate Challenge Fund (a grant scheme for community groups across Scotland), on 11 January 2010.
  • April 2010: The Trust was declared unsuccessful in its attempts to receive funding from the Climate Challenge Fund. Allocation of funds would have resulted in each household being offered composting bins.
  • February 2011: Bid for funding of a mobile charity shop was submitted to the Climate Challenge Fund, following the extension of the grant scheme for a further year.
    • Allocation of funding would result in second-hand/charity goods being collected from homes not just in Rousay, Egilsay and Wyre, but on the other islands within Orkney too, as well as remote locations on the Mainland of Orkney. Goods collected will be stored in a trailer, which will then travel to each area's Community Hall, with donations received through the sale of the items going towards Age Concern Orkney, which does not currently operate a physical retail outlet itself.
    • The Trust aims to save 69.7 tonnes of Carbon through the delivery of this project, should the necessary funding (£18,300) be allocated.
  • March 2011: The Trust hears that it was unsuccessful in its latest attempts to receive funding for this project.

What happens next:
  • This project has reached completion.
